An open apology to Harry/Ginny shippers concerning my Ron/Hermione essay. An open apology to Harry/Ginny shippers concerning my Ron/Hermione essay.
A few things have been going on in the Harry Potter fandom lately that have made me a bit uncomfortable about my Ron/Hermione essay, especially various discussions in connielane's entry here, so I just wanted to swallow my pride and make a statement.
I'm sorry that so many people were hurt and/or offended by what I said about the way Harry/Ginny was written, and the scene with Harry, Ginny, Cho, and Luna in Deathly Hallows, both in the body of my essay and in the comments. The essay could have stood on its own without this point, and in retrospect, I wish I hadn't included it.
It is true that I prefer R/Hr to H/G, but I should have considered the feelings of H/G shippers before I clicked "Post." I should have remembered that not everyone shares my views, and expressed my opinions accordingly. The last part and the ETA were written in haste, and I know that to many of you it sounded condescending and dismissive. It quite likely is condescending and dismissive. I'm sorry that I didn't think harder and longer before posting it.
I did not intend to imply that anyone who responded negatively to my post was only overreacting, or misinterpreting what I had said. If what I wrote made you angry, or upset, or sad, that's your right, and it's your right to tell me that in whatever way you wish.
I would also like to make it clear that I am not criticizing anyone who did agree with my comments on Ginny, and said so in the comments. You're also entitled to your opinion, and I'm glad that you came over and gave it. Anything negative that came out of such discussions is entirely my fault for bringing the subject up in the first place.
The only excuse I have to offer is, that after a year or two away from the Harry Potter fandom, I'd forgotten how divisive and sensitive an issue shipping could be, and I was slightly overexcited after coming off the high of finishing the last book. I promise to be more considerate of others' feelings in the future.
Finally: to everyone who did comment on my essay, thank you for taking the time to let me know what you thought of it, for discussing the book with me, and for sharing your opinions on the book, the ships, and on me.
